Bring Poison Ivy to Life: Your Ultimate Cosplay Guide
The Art of Toxic Beauty: Becoming Uma Thurman’s Poison Ivy
“I am Nature's arm. Her spirit. Her will. Hell, I am Mother Nature."
– Poison Ivy (Batman & Robin)
Poison Ivy is an iconic character, effortlessly blending beauty, power, and a deep connection to nature. When I set out to create my second version of her look, I knew I wanted something that captured her seductive yet dangerous energy while also being practical and comfortable for a full day at a convention. If you’re looking to create your own Poison Ivy cosplay, here’s exactly what you need and how to bring this eco-warrior to life! Check out my original Poison Ivy Cosplay.

Poison Ivy Cosplay Essentials – What You Need
Costume Details 🍃
My second Poison Ivy cosplay was a refined take on the classic look, incorporating a mix of DIY elements and carefully chosen pieces to make the costume stand out. Here’s what you need:
- Bodysuit: A green base bodysuit provides structure and coverage, giving that seamless Poison Ivy aesthetic. My velvet version was great – but without straps it didn’t stay up very well – so this time I wore a corset with straps underneath to provide better support and shaping.
- Corset: (optional) If your body suit is strapless I highly recommend support underneath, like a flexible, strapped corset.
- Vines/Ivy Leaves: I cut hundreds of ivy leaves off the vine, then hot glued them directly to the corset (and gloves). I then hand painted the leaves with a few different shades of acrylic paint to make the bodysuit more dimensional. I wrapped some artificial vines around by boots – which worked ok – other than dragging on the ground.
- Gloves: Long green gloves – I cut off the fingers so that the gloves would stay in place but be closer to the look of Uma Thurman’s Poison Ivy.
- Shoes: I originally wore black kitten heels, but the second time around, I had a bonus pair of tan boots I wasn’t wearing – so I painted (two coats + one touch up) of green paint. If I had more time, I would have sprayed some sort of sealant on the boots – because after a day of walking, they were rubbing off in a couple spots.
- Cape: I started with a basic green velvet cape – on my second Ivy Cosplay, I added a couple yards of sheer red fabric underneath – I used Velcro. It did not work great… If I were to do it again I think I would’ve attempted to sew a couple spots or use safety pins.
- Tights: Green tights – didn’t do anything special to them – but I did switch to a more sheer shade of green, which popped better against the ivy and other shades of true green.
Hair & Makeup 💄
Poison Ivy’s signature look wouldn’t be complete without bold red hair and an enchanting makeup look. Here’s how to achieve it:
- Signature Red Hair: Whether you opt for a wig or dye your own hair, a vibrant, deep red shade is key.
- Green Makeup Accents: A hint of green eyeshadow or eyeliner ties the look together while giving that supernatural feel.
- Eyebrows: For my original Poison Ivy I used eyelash glue to adhere tiny ivy leaves to my eyebrows. For my second Poison Ivy, I crafted her custom eyebrows with foam, paint, glue, glitter, and a tracing outline I found on Pinterest.
- Glitter: Obviously optional – but smearing green glitter around my eyes allowed them to not be perfect and still look good.
- Dramatic Lashes: Bold, fluttery lashes add a touch of villainous glamour.
- Lips: A deep red or berry lip is ideal – but make sure you bring it with you for touch ups.
Props, Props, Props!
Spoiler alert, I love props!! Props and accessories make cosplay more immersive, recognizable, and fun by adding personality, storytelling, and interactive elements. Signature items like Poison Ivy’s vines or a vial of “toxin” instantly communicate the character, while accessories enhance posing and photoshoots by creating dynamic movement. They also encourage engagement at conventions, making interactions more playful and memorable. Plus, crafting or customizing props allows cosplayers to add a personal touch to their look. Whether handmade or store-bought, unique details bring a cosplay to life in an exciting and creative way. 🌿
Examples for Uma Thurman’s Poison Ivy:
- Themed Accessories: Consider adding a poison vial, plant-themed jewelry, or even a rose-covered staff for extra flair.
- Glittery “Love Dust” Pouch: Poison Ivy uses her hypnotic pheromone dust to entrance men in the movie. I bought pink powder to try this…but ran out of time to incorporate it.
- Green, Sparkly Microphone: Poison Ivy makes a grand entrance at the charity event with a sultry, showgirl-style performance. A green, sequined microphone could be a fun throwback to that moment!
- Bedazzled “Eco-Warrior” Sign: Play up her extreme environmentalist persona with a cheeky, vintage-style protest sign. Example text: “Make Gotham Green Again” or “Plants Over People” with vines wrapped around it.
Or if you really want to make me jealous… You could create an oversized, plant prop. Poison Ivy’s talking plant in Batman & Robin (1997) was named “Audrey II” in a clear homage to the carnivorous plant from Little Shop of Horrors. While the movie never explicitly names it, the giant, animated plant in her lair that she speaks to and interacts with was a signature part of her character’s over-the-top, campy portrayal.
Tips for Bringing Poison Ivy to Life 🌱
A great Poison Ivy cosplay goes beyond the outfit—it’s about channeling her confidence, attitude, and signature seduction. Here’s how to really embody the character:
💃 Posing & Expressions
- Stand tall, poised, and graceful—Ivy doesn’t slouch.
- Use slow, deliberate hand gestures like you’re controlling vines.
- Over-the-shoulder smirk – Classic villain move for photos.
- Tilt your head slightly and make intense eye contact for that hypnotic allure.
- Pose with one hand on your hip and the other delicately touching a vine or leaf.
💚 Attitude & Personality
Poison Ivy isn’t just another villain—she’s powerful, seductive, and totally in control. Channeling her personality means:
- Speaking slowly and confidently—she’s never in a rush.
- Using sultry, exaggerated movements to emphasize elegance.
- Smiling playfully but dangerously—she enjoys toying with her enemies.
- Treating plants like your trusted allies—gently touching leaves or vines as if they are living creatures.
- Leaning into her eco-warrior mindset—if someone litters, make a dramatic comment like, “Tsk, tsk. You’ll pay for that.”
Photoshoot Ideas 📸
To capture the full Poison Ivy experience, your photos should reflect her mystical, dangerous, and plant-infused world. Here are some ideas:
- Nature-Inspired Settings – Shoot in a botanical garden, greenhouse, or ivy-covered wall for the best aesthetic.
- Urban Jungle Vibes – Pose in a city setting covered in vines, symbolizing Ivy reclaiming Gotham.
- Love Dust Effect – Use pink powder to mimic her pheromone attack in action shots.
- Vine Interaction – Hold, wrap, or pose with artificial ivy vines as if they’re responding to your power.
